Makeup For Men

Makeup for Men

Although most of our men these days leave makeup to the girls, there are times when it is helpful to even out that manly glow.ย  As a professional makeup artist, my job is to freshen up male models before they get their pictures taken.

(If you are a man and are looking for daily makeup guidance, these same rules apply)

On photo shoots for men, I am not dolling the men up, I am toning them down.ย  This means a bit of bronzer on the bones and a touch of color to the cheeks and lips so everything looks moisturized and healthy.ย  I am giving them an even glow so their audience sees the man, not the blemishes or a pale I-work-indoors skin tone.

For skin tone, I use a tinted moisturizer and tiny amounts of concealer. The tinted moisturizer is applied sparingly in a thin coat, blending into the hair and necklines. A product with a slight glow to it is great, as long as it isn’t excessive enough to cause light reflection.

Concealer can be dotted on and feathered to smooth blemishes and undereye circles. I recommend one shade darker than the skin tone for spots and one shade lighter for under the eyes.

Adding a light dusting of a matte bronzer can go a long way in bringing out a man’s masculinity. I use two shades darker than the skin tone and, after always tapping my brush, take long sweeping strokes from side to side over the forehead, cheekbones and chin.

Lips are easy-tinted lip balm comes in any color and is excellent at pigmenting the lips so that they are noticeable but not lipstick-ey. I prefer orange to berry.

Makeup for men takes ten minutes or less, depending onย skin discolorations and photo shoot conditions such as sun and heat.

Men and Eyebrow Grooming

Men’s Eyebrows Should Be Well-Groomed

Dark or medium-haired men usually need a good brow grooming at least every month or two. Try a natural shape with no added arch to keep it masculine. Tweeze or wax around the brow line at the top and, if needed, under the eyebrow. Especially clean the spot in the center of the face between the two brows, known as the ‘uni-brow’ area.

After shaping, trim the brows to make them less bushy. Brush them upwards with a small bristle brush and gently trim all hairs that exceed the eyebrow line. Do the same for the underside of the brow.

Good eyebrows frame the eye and add balance . Be sure yours are doing their job!
