1970’s Fashion Makes Another Comeback

This month I visited the fashion district of Los Angeles and found myself staring at the women around me. They were dressed, head to toe, in 1970’s memorabilia. Their wrap-around dresses and jumpers had geometric lines, they had bell-bottom jeans under floral chiffon dusters and when I saw their platform shoes and V-shaped haircuts, I knew it- this era is back.

Following the lingering music festival trends that celebrated colorful, flowy, braided clothing (and hair), groovy throwback fashion takes it a step further. In the beauty industry, we are seeing a lot of boho trends from magazine looks on celebrities and at public appearances like the Grammys, including still current messy bun and broken waves hairstyling.

Since most of us got 70’s forehead fringe five years ago and wore it proudly in our eyes for another four, bangs are not on the predictions list for hair trends in 2019. We do see straight hair coming back, and that only means one part line for this style genre: right down the middle.

One 1970’s trend we are not seeing yet is disco. Shimmery, glittery, dance-all-night wardrobing has yet to appear. Instead, expect pop culture favorites like thin sweaters tucked into high-waisted flare jeans.

Bohemian and free-flowing is still popular. With our salon located in the Midtown District in Reno, we see boho daily. Hair is long, half braided or bunned and gently highlighted. Messy yet put-together is the norm. For clothing, Midtowners are shopping in grandma’s closet and at thrift stores and they love it.

Riding the tailwind of 1960’s-era geometrically-shaped-outer-space everything, the 1970’s were a time of freedom, self-expression and groove. With a mix between nature and the future, styles are wildflowery and far out-something our pop culture can experiment with and enjoy.

Grey Blending For Men

Hair and Makeup For Men by Rebecca Schembri, Breeze Salon Reno

Men: let’s talk about your appearance. If you have grey hair and would like to tone it down, there are a few options for your look. First, decide how much chrome you’d like to have in your hair. Most men look distinguished and sexy with some grey. It just depends on your personal preference and on your target audience (romantic, professional, young, mature, etc).

Men Breeze Salon Reno

Next, talk to your hairdresser about color if you want to soften your silver. Grey blending is the best alternative to permanent haircolor because it slowly rinses out within a month. You will never see that line of demarcation telling you it’s time for more color (and no one else will either). Blending is usually done at the shampoo bowl and processes in five minutes before or after your haircut. Super fast.

Men Breeze Salon Reno

Grey blending does not completely cover grey. It simply tones the hair to give it a softer look. If you want all of your greys gone, consider a permanent haircoloring service. This takes a bit longer than blending at the bowl the results are more solid, compared to translucent.

Men Breeze Salon Reno

If you prefer to color at home, ask your salon professional for a safe demipermanent recommendation you can apply in the shower. Whatever your preference, you’ve got options-just ask.

How to choose the right wedding hair for your big day? Here are some hacks that, as a Wedding Hair and Makeup Artist, I specialize in:

Bridal hair mostly depends on the type of dress you will wear.  If your dress is low cut or strapless, hair can be swept up to reveal the neckline or left down to be showcased.

Reno_Tahoe_Wedding
Dresses that are low on the chestline leave open space for flowy hair. Bridal Hair and Makeup by Rebecca Schembri, Breeze Salon Reno

A dress that is high on the neck or shoulders takes up more visual space and may look better with an updo. Backless dresses look beautiful with hair completely pinned or off to one side, giving the wedding audience a chance to admire the your beautiful skin from behind.

Extra-long hair may look best pulled into a cascade to flatter both the bride and the gown. Hair by Rebecca Schembri, Breeze Salon Reno

The idea is to keep proportion between your hair and dress so that they compliment each other.

For bridesmaids, hair can be similar to yours but should never upstage the bridal look, since you have center stage on this day.

Many hairstylists offer a free wedding consultation and have recommendations for other wedding needs, such as makeup and photography.  Getting professional advice can make planning your wedding a little easier.

How do you choose the best makeup look for your big day? Here are some pointers…

If you want a pure and fresh look, ask your makeup artist for ‘night time natural’. This will give you a soft look that isn’t washed out in pictures. Your audience will love it.

If you want something more dramatic, ask for ‘ballroom’ makeup. This includes a sexy, smokey eye, lots of blush and contouring and a nude or natural lip. This is a great look for evening weddings and if you are comfortable wearing makeup.

Forehead Fringe- The Perfect Bang

kali 9
Haircut Color, Makeup and Style by Rebecca Schembri, Breeze Salon Reno.

Let’s talk about front fringe! It can transform your look by emphasizing your eyes and by softening your forehead.  Also, forehead fringe continues to make the yearly trend.  Here’s how to style it and how to relax your ‘cowlicks’, giving you the perfect bang.

The crisscross method:  On wet (not damp) hair and using a soft cushion brush, set your blow dryer to high heat.  Take thick sections and brush your hair diagonally across your forehead alternating with each side. Once almost dry, brush the sections sideways up and over your forehead to create lift.  Finish with a few more crisscross strokes.  Flat-iron as needed.  For straight-fringed girls, that is all it takes. No hairspray required!

For long, side bangs:  After blow-drying with your crisscross method, tilt your head all the way to one side until your forehead fringe is above your brow line and dangling in the air.  From 18 inches away, lightly mist your bangs with hairspray.  (Catwalk’s Session Series Work It Hairspray is our favorite.)  Stay tilted and gently shake your head so that your fringe gains movement.

Catwalk Session Series Hairspray

For extra hold, repeat this process.  Then count to five Mississippi and come on up!  If your fringe is too helmet-like, make a claw with your hand and gently rough the area by scratching your head one inch from the hairline without disturbing the hairsprayed line at the brow.  VOILA!  Your bangs should last at least four hours or until you comb them out.

If your forehead fringe has grown too long, please see your hairstylist unless you have a super soft, wispy bang.  If that is the case, you can trim the fringe yourself in-between salon visits.  Use haircutting shears and lightly point-notch the ends by cutting vertically.

Enjoy your perfect bang and be sure to comment below about your hair!

Summertime Hairstyles

Summertime Styles are Loose and Tousled

Want to keep on trend this season and still have your summer fun? Beach bag products are simple and fast and keep you looking great. Check out the tips below to do your hair on the fly.

For girls, hair is loose and tousled but not frizzy. Try a leave in conditioner or smoothing cream such as Catwalk Leave in Conditioner by TIGI. Remember to add a generous amount of product to enhance natural styling. Apply in the first five minutes after any water play.

Boys are wearing hair longer on top and shaved short on the sides. This look is super low-maintenance and easy to style with a small amount of styling cream.  Try Up Front Gel Pomade by Bed Head. It controls and shines and keeps that long hair off of the face. Reno_Hair_Rebecca_Schembri

Ask your hairstylist for ideas on using a single product for beachy summer looks that don’t require a mirror or a blow dryer. Enjoy the outdoors and stay fashionable!
