Babylights for Curly Hair

If you happened to see Taylor Swift on this month’s issue of Elle magazine and Jennifer Lopez on Bazaar, you may have realized something very simple: natural colors are huge right now. After going through every mermaid color known to man and outerspace over the past five years, haircolor has come back home.

April, 2019

When you think about today’s trends and how they relate to your look, the question to ask yourself is, “Who is my audience?” As much as your inner Khaleesi/alien goddess wants to express fantasy hair, it may not be an appealing look for those who are most important to you: your fans. It can, and often is, a distraction and an endless trip to the beauty salon for a retouch. Tedious and expensive, fashion colors have begun to calm down in the mainstream.

What’s the difference between babylights and contouring? Both are balayage, which means “sweeping” in French. The technique is a painting on of lightener or color, in a gentle sweeping effect, rather than the classic application of roots to ends highlights or lowlights. With balayage, the color is blended up to an area of the hair and muted so that the line of demarcation is invisible. There is no need to retouch balayage when the hair grows-it is an as needed service.

Babylights around the face create illmination.

Babylights are very thin balayage-almost a tiny shimmer of lightener. This is used to brighten your look without showing any highlighting lines. Contouring, though, is bulky. It means taking huge chunks around your face and creating either light or depth with darkening or lightening. In J-Lo’s case, the contouring is blonde and is used to highlight around her medium skin color, creating a splash of brightness.

Jennifer Lopez has Blonde Contouring around her face.

Should you color at home? Although home-coloring has it’s place, highlights will usually go wrong if you try do DIY it. Besides, unless you have greys at your root line and need monthly touchups, balayage is designed for the once or twice-a-year client. Let a professional you believe in take care our your lightening services and you will love your hair every day.

How do you choose the best makeup look for your big day? Here are some pointers…

If you want a pure and fresh look, ask your makeup artist for ‘night time natural’. This will give you a soft look that isn’t washed out in pictures. Your audience will love it.

If you want something more dramatic, ask for ‘ballroom’ makeup. This includes a sexy, smokey eye, lots of blush and contouring and a nude or natural lip. This is a great look for evening weddings and if you are comfortable wearing makeup.

Makeup For Men

Makeup for Men

Although most of our men these days leave makeup to the girls, there are times when it is helpful to even out that manly glow.  As a professional makeup artist, my job is to freshen up male models before they get their pictures taken.

(If you are a man and are looking for daily makeup guidance, these same rules apply)

On photo shoots for men, I am not dolling the men up, I am toning them down.  This means a bit of bronzer on the bones and a touch of color to the cheeks and lips so everything looks moisturized and healthy.  I am giving them an even glow so their audience sees the man, not the blemishes or a pale I-work-indoors skin tone.

Makeup for photography creates definition on a man’s face

For skin tone, I use a tinted moisturizer and tiny amounts of concealer. The tinted moisturizer is applied sparingly in a thin coat, blending into the hair and necklines. A product with a slight glow to it is great, as long as it isn’t excessive enough to cause light reflection.

Concealer can be dotted on and feathered to smooth blemishes and undereye circles. I recommend one shade darker than the skin tone for spots and one shade lighter for under the eyes.

Adding a light dusting of a matte bronzer can go a long way in bringing out a man’s masculinity. I use two shades darker than the skin tone and, after always tapping my brush, take long sweeping strokes from side to side over the forehead, cheekbones and chin.

Lips are easy-tinted lip balm comes in any color and is excellent at pigmenting the lips so that they are noticeable but not lipstick-ey. I prefer orange to berry.

Makeup for men takes ten minutes or less, depending on skin discolorations and photo shoot conditions such as sun and heat.

Day-Old Braids

Deconstructed braids show up on the runway
Day-old braids can look slept on.

A deconstructed braid is popular this year with runway collections showing us the how-to.

Mara Hoffman’s southwestern appeal for Spring 2015 showcases a thick, wispy, I-did-my-hair-two-days-ago braid and has her audience quickly following the trend.

To do a day-old braid, dry hair without a brush using only fingers for combing. Spray in dry shampoo for matte texture and hold.

Create a braid using traditional three, four or five strand techniques and mix the braids along the way so they give a more unique and carefree mirage.

Gently deconstruct the braid with fingers by prying open and pulling at areas along the braid shaft. Finish by loosening strands around the face for framing.

A messy braid that is clean and fresh?! High five to TIGI designer Nick Irwin for this look. Now we can do our braids and sleep on them too.

How to Use Dry Shampoo

dry_shampoo_TIGI
Dry shampoos ‘create massive lift at the roots, helping hair look and feel fuller and giving it more texture making it easier to style and secure up-dos.’- TIGI

If you have an oily scalp, a dry shampoo is a great option for you.  This fresh-smelling powder actually suspends oil from the hair into airy fluff.  It comes in mini sizes for your purse or overnight bag and also large sizes for your bathroom supply.

To apply dry shampoo, take thin sections on dry, day old hair and spray along the root line.  Continue to do this section by section.  Scrub your scalp with the pads of your fingers and brush through, if desired.  Super easy and smells good!

Dry shampoo is also great for refreshing and creating big hairstyles.  It is a stylist’s secret on the runway and in photo shoots.  Lift hair from the ends and lightly spray dry shampoo throughout hairstyle.  Tousle, as desired, or shape into an updo.

This product is so easy to use and delivers great results. Enjoy!

It’s summertime and it is time to rest that hair. Do you know how to wear your tresses on the natural and how to style without a mirror?

Let’s recap our beauty rules for warm weather:

~ Learn how to braid. From long French braids to little front side braids, braiding makes you look pretty without the fuss, especially if you are playing outside.

~ Carry a leave-in conditioner in your beach bag. From Argon or Moroccan oil to sea sprays and curl creams, these revive and refresh your hair before and after warm weather fun.

~Use your fingers. Natural styles emphasize definition. Form and tousle your hair throughout the day, leaving that round winter brush where it belongs…in the bathroom.

~Get accessories. Pins, flowers, headbands and hats are a little party for your head and you can keep them in your bag for last minute beauty smarts.

Remember, natural styling is good for your hair. Be sure to give it the summer retreat it deserves and let it be healthy. Enjoy the season!
