Wedding planning can be confusing and exhausting for many brides to be. Having to choose a venue, photographer, makeup artist, deejay, florist, caterer, videographer, honeymoon and wedding gown is often an overwhelming task. How do you know what choices will make you and your guests happy?
As a Wedding Hair and Makeup Artist, I have been witness to over a hundred weddings. I have seen many decisions that lead to success and some that lead to unnecessary stress. Here are my top hacks on how to love your wedding day.
Wedding Hack #1: Do it, Delegate it or Drop it. Planning your big day can be a fun project as a couple. You will work as a team and have to practice good communication skills. Keeping your wedding chores at a comfortable speed will help you both enjoy the process more. Remember: he may not care what color the tablecloths will be. Asking your bridesmaids for help is a good idea, especially if you want to craft homemade decorations.
Wedding Hack #2: Choose Your Photographer Well. Aside from the joyful memories you and your loved ones will have, the only real proof of your wedding will be in pictures. Choosing the right photographer will make the difference between showing off your photos for 75 years or putting them away after two.
Be sure your photographer understands you and your desires well. She should take pictures of everything in sight and should know all of the best poses and angles. A photographer who is friendly, professional, on time, and has a great portfolio is a keeper!
Wedding Hack #3: People Eat and Run So Keep Them Entertained. It’s not enough to just play good music at your reception and to expect everyone to dance. Often guests are shy and get sleepy if the energy dies down and their bellies are full. Many brides have been horrified to see that their party died off as soon as the cake was cut. You can avoid this by planning lots of fun activities and crowd involvement.
A good emcee/master of ceremonies will challenge your guests to stay engaged. He can hold couple’s trivia and dance contests and keep guests feeling involved and joyous. Your invitees love you and will gladly stick around and play if you present them with a call to action.
Wedding Hack # 4: Keep It Simple or Hire a Professional. If you can, plan ahead and keep it minimalistic or else hire a wedding planner. For DIYers, the more pre-planning you do, the smoother your wedding week and big day will be. Try to keep things simple and elegant. Let your style direct your decor and entertainment choices and cut back on minor details anywhere possible.
Wedding Hack # 5: Consult a Financial Planner. Aside from the costs of your photographer, dress, hair and makeup, keeping your wedding plans light can help your expenses stay on track. Do you want a big party or would you rather landscape your backyard or pay off your car? Considering the reward for each of these things is important; compromising on some of your wedding items may pay off in the long run. Asking your financial planner for guidance will help put things into long term perspective.
Wedding Hack #6: He Sees the Wedding As a Gift to You. Your groom is marrying you so that he can keep you forever. He doesn’t care too much about placesavers and seating charts. He wants food and drink and he wants to show you off. Go easy on him when doing the planning and let him have some room for relaxation. If, for months, every conversation you have with him is about the wedding, you may be overdoing it.
He knows that you want a dream day where you are in a beautiful gown surrounded by flowers and mountains and oceans and where all of your loved ones are congratulating you both with endless applause.
He wants to give you the proverbial world, moon and stars; going through wedding planning with you is a personal sacrifice he is making as a gesture of true love. Don’t take it personally if he seems indifferent in choosing the guestbook and wedding favors. He truly just wants you to be fulfilled and asking for his opinion on the small stuff may make him uncomfortable.
Wedding Hack # 7: Iron Those Robes. If you plan on gifting satin robes to your bridesmaids, designate a helper to have them ironed or steamed. When your photographer comes to catch you girls getting into your hair and makeup and your bridesmaids helping you into your dress, wrinkles wont be an issue.

Wedding Hack #8: Reduce Clutter in Your Bridal Suite. Your photographer will likely want to get some behind-the-scenes shots of you in your bridal suite. He will take pictures of shoes, brushes, mimosas, flowers, accessories, rings, gifts, letters, tags and anything that will add to the value of your wedding portfolio.
Asking your bridesmaids and bridal suite guests to keep their belongings put away will add to the beauty of your pictures. Someone you trust to keep the room organized and clutter-free can be in charge of directing extra stuff to closets and drawers. She should also monitor climate control and your wedding day getting ready music. Having a clean bridal suite will help your photographer to have more angles to shoot from and will contribute to your mental clarity on such a busy day.
Wedding Hack # 9: Show Your Girls Extra Love and Appreciation. Bridesmaids go through a lot to support you throughout your wedding season. They have to make time in their personal and works schedules for your bachelorette party, rehearsal dinner and wedding weekend.
Bridal party members usually spend hundreds of dollars to purchase a gown, hair and makeup services, travel and food and drinks. Be sure they know how much they mean to you. Gifts and words of appreciation go a long way in making your wedding party feel special and in sync with you.
Wedding hack # 11: May the Mother of the Bride Have Her Moment. Whoever is giving this couple in holy matrimony should be duly recognized. Moms wait decades to entrust you to someone who will take care of you always. Letting her have her happiness on this day will be a huge milestone in your mom’s life.
Let her contribute as much as she wants and be sure she feels beautiful for the ceremony and reception. If she is shy, let her wear something subtly elegant. If she’s flamboyant, surprise her with a forbidden red dress and let her shine.
Wedding Hack # 11: Love Your Wedding Day. Make the decision ahead of time that you are going to enjoy your wedding planning and your wedding day. Focus on fun and relaxation and trust that simple planning will pay off.
The more you treat yourself to lots of rest and happiness during your wedding week, the more you and those around you will love your wedding day.
Remember, you will be glowing in a gorgeous gown and exquisite hair and makeup; as long as there are flowers and lights on a beautiful backdrop, your reception will be lovely.
Choose the things you are going to be serious about, like getting great pictures, and let the rest unfold naturally.
